Developing a data-driven understanding of the factors influencing gender pay gaps.
The Young Women’s Trust champions young women aged 18 to 30 on low or no pay, aiming to create a more equal world of work and raise young women’s incomes.
We undertook an analysis of administrative and secondary survey data on employment to estimate models of pay and earnings to measure the gender pay gap, and decompose it into its key determinants. We used UK Labour force survey data to produce a range of descriptive analysis of gender pay gaps, followed by estimating wage equation models contingent on a range of explanatory factors, and identifying the variables making the most significant contribution to pay gaps for young women.
We then worked with YWT to identify a set of key messages, and developed accessible and engaging visualisations of our analysis to support their media work.
